The Calligraphy Room / Purple Room

 

The inspiration for creating the Calligraphy Room, located on the first floor of the building was derived from the owner’s visit to the Forbidden City and its surroundings in Beijing, China, in 2018.

 

The concept is based on the Chinese wordings Zi Qi Dong Lai which literally translated to mean “the purple cloud shine from the east of the sky”. Traditionally in Chinese culture, the color purple represents prosperity and good luck, and is associated with royalties and nobles. It is believed purple refers to the North Star which in traditional Chinese astrology is the abode of the Celestial Emperor.

The hanging lights on the ground floor of the Diem Bakery building is a permanent art installation created by the Encomas team. The lighting covers were fabricated by a young and talented local tinsmith, Lim Zhan How from Pekan Cina. A third generation tinsmith who apprenticed from his father, he had hand crafted the 48 pieces of round cone shape lighting covers made from bronze and tin plates.

From a no name, no one want to come near lorong to an art corner, community space, neighbourhood gathering place and little green area to hosting many social activities n international events and recently become the most instagrammable cafe n Lorong in Malaysia n a tourism hot spot. Not to mention the many wedding shooting and more

 

This lorong, Lorong Penjara Lama aka Lorong Caffe Diem, the first lorong in the history of Alor Setar, dating back 300 years, do have a long way to go. We will take good care of the lorong under our Project CSR and thank you so much for all of those who make this happen.

Who could imagine 7 years ago, this lorong located next to Jalan Penjara Lama, the first road in the history of Alor Setar and behind Caffe Diem at Pekan Cina, Alor Setar, which was full of rubbish, dark at night, haunted due to the surrounding abandoned buildings, a drug addict haven and definitely not safe to be there at night, has been revitalized into a community space.
